What is Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)?
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is a prescription treatment for balancing hormonal levels in order to achieve your body’s ideal physiological levels. HRT helps to reverse the negative side effects attributed to hormone loss, Menopause, and/or Andropause. HRT accomplishes this by restoring your body’s natural hormones to their optimal levels.
The HRT medications used at Live Well Medical Centers are plant-derived and chemically changed in a laboratory until they are identical to what your body would naturally produce. HRT is customizable; in other words, it can be adjusted to fit your needs, unlike conventional hormone therapies – which has a few standard dosage strengths.
What are hormones and what do they do?
To explain exactly what hormones are, first, let us examine an ordinary definition of “Hormone” from a standard dictionary.
In human biology, a hormone is a substance produced by one gland or organ of the body that then travels through the bloodstream to affect other tissues, organs, etc. Hormones regulate everything from growth, sexual development, the reproductive cycle, digestion and sleep to hair growth, hunger and the production of red blood cells (with many more functions in between).
Some of the more important hormones include (there are many more than just this list):
- Adrenaline or Epinephrine
Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) replenishes our hormone supply to normal levels, therefore, allowing the body to properly regulate all these critical functions.
How long have natural hormones been in use?
Natural hormones have been around for 40-50 years, perhaps even longer. Some countries in Europe use them almost exclusively, instead of synthetic hormone replacement. They have been in use in the United States almost as long but only have gained popularity in the last 5-10 years since the results of the Woman’s Health Initiative Study produced such negative results for synthetic hormones.
The effects of low male hormones came to the forefront of the medical world as well, commonly called Andropause. Also influencing the public are entertainment figures such as Oprah, Suzanne Somers and Robin McGraw, the wife of Dr. Phil who all promote the use of natural hormones.
Why the recent buzz around Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)?
Forty years ago, our bodies did not have enough time to feel the effects of hormone loss. Our life expectancy has increased dramatically over the last 40-50 years, and the negative effects of hormone loss, Menopause, and/or Andropause are beginning to be felt on a much greater scale.
Recent medical research pointed to the fact that our bodies still need these substances to function at optimal performance. As a result, HRT was developed as a way to return our bodies to their ideal physical, mental, and sexual levels.
